Monarch Butterfly Migration Photo Expedition
An Immersive Wildlife, Photography & Nature Journey in the Heart of Mexico
Each winter, tens of millions of monarch butterflies travel over 4,000 kilometers to gather in the high-altitude oyamel fir forests of central Mexico — one of the greatest insect migrations on Earth. Walking quietly beneath the canopy as the sun warms the trees, you’ll hear a soft rustle... then suddenly, the sky may come alive in a storm of orange and black.
This journey is more than just a spectacle. It’s a soulful encounter with nature’s intelligence and resilience.
Led by me, Paulo Goa, naturalist, wildlife photographer and expedition guide, this adventure is designed to go beyond sightseeing. I bring deep ecological context and years of experience guiding in monarch sanctuaries, sharing insights into butterfly biology, conservation efforts, and local cultural perspectives. We’ll travel mindfully, in small groups, stay in charming lodges close to the reserves, and explore remote trails at a relaxed pace — always with your safety and comfort in mind. With photography guidance always available, you'll have time and support to compose the perfect shot — whether it’s a quiet close-up of clustered wings or a dramatic wide-angle of monarchs in flight.
Whether you're here to witness a miracle of migration, dive deep into butterfly biology, or capture unforgettable images, this journey is designed for meaningful connection — with nature, with culture, and with yourself. Expect moments of awe, fun and camaraderie, breathtaking views, and quiet time to reflect in the presence of something far greater than ourselves. It’s an adventure for the curious, the thoughtful, and those craving a deeper connection with the wild.
Logistics & Itinerary
From the Heart of Mexico City to the Sacred Monarch Forests
Trip Start & End: Mexico City (CDMX) *
Trip Length: 6 days / 5 nights
Group Size: Small & personal (max 8 guests)
Fitness Level: Moderate hiking at high elevation (10,000ft+)
Day 1 – Arrival & Welcome in Coyoacán, Mexico City
We begin in the bohemian heart of Mexico City * — Coyoacán, home to Frida Kahlo, colonial plazas, and tree-lined streets. After settling into our hotel, we gather for a welcome dinner at a favorite local spot to get to know each other, go over the expedition plan, and start tuning into the journey ahead.
Day 2 – Journey to Tlalpujahua: A Photographer’s Gem
After breakfast, we leave the bustle of CDMX and drive west to the magical town of Tlalpujahua, known for its pink-stone streets, artisan culture, and forested hills. The afternoon is spent exploring and photographing this unique town — from baroque churches to golden-hour mountain views. We stay in a charming local hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening with a short Monarch Photography lecture before dinner.
Day 3 – Sierra Chincua Sanctuary & Angangueo
Following an early breakfast and checkout, we head to Sierra Chincua Monarch Sanctuary, where the magic begins. A short hike (or optional horseback ride) leads us to the butterfly colonies — thousands upon thousands clustering and fluttering in the mist. After lunch and artisan shopping at the sanctuary, we descend into the mountain town of Angangueo for a stroll and photo walk. In the evening, we check in to Rancho Cumbre Monarca, a cozy mountain lodge where we’ll have dinner and rest under the stars.
Day 4 – El Rosario Sanctuary & Monarch Conservation Talk
Today we visit the most iconic site of the migration: El Rosario Sanctuary. With patience and the right light, we may witness the unforgettable moment when millions take to the air. After lunch and time for local crafts at the sanctuary, we return to the lodge for a calm afternoon of rest, reflection, or photo review. In the evening, I’ll lead a guided session on monarch biology, migration, and conservation, offering deeper insight into the incredible journey you’ve witnessed.
Day 5 – Return to Mexico City via Toluca’s Cosmovitral
After a calm breakfast, there will be an Adobe Lightroom editing workshop for those wishing a bit more technical depth in post-production. We have a delicious lunch buffet after check-out and begin our return to the city, stopping in Toluca to visit the Cosmovitral, a stunning stained-glass botanical garden that blends art and nature. By evening, we arrive back in Mexico City * for a farewell dinner — a final toast to shared stories, new friends, and wild beauty.
